The town of Alresford near Winchester was the scene of preliminary cavalry skirmishes before the Battle of Cheriton in March 1644. Royalist forces under Hopton initially pushed Parliamentary advance forces back through the town, before the main battle decided the contest decisively in Parliament's favour the following day.
