The Battle

History & Significance

The Second Battle of Lincoln in 1217 was fought partly as a relief of the castle, which a loyalist garrison under Nicola de la Haye had held throughout the French invasion. William Marshal and his force entered through the north gate and attacked the besieging French in the city below. The rout in the streets became known as the Lincoln Fair.
