As Fairfax advanced into Devon after Langport Parliamentary forces took Powderham Castle on the Exe estuary cutting off Royalist communications; part of the systematic reduction of Royalist Devon in late 1645 that eventually forced Hopton to surrender at Truro in March 1646.
