MacColla's forces raided Ardnamurchan, the westernmost peninsula of the Scottish mainland, as part of the wider campaign to destroy Campbell power in the western Highlands. Ardnamurchan was Campbell-controlled territory and its raiding was part of the systematic attack on Argyll's resource base that supported the Covenanting war effort.
