History & Significance

At Highnam near Gloucester on 24 March 1643 Parliamentary forces under Sir William Waller crossed the Severn and surrounded a Royalist Welsh force under Colonel Herbert Price that had crossed to relieve Gloucester. Caught between the river and Waller, Price surrendered with approximately 1,400 men. The victory was achieved through rapid manoeuvre and river crossing.
