History & Significance

Barton-on-Humber on the south bank of the Humber controlled the principal ferry crossing between Lincolnshire and the East Riding. Royalist forces held the crossing in 1643 to maintain communications between Newcastle and the Lincoln garrisons. Parliamentary forces from Hull attempted to interdict the crossing by naval action and raids.
