History & Significance

Belvoir Castle on its ridge above the Vale of Belvoir was a major Royalist strongpoint threatening communications between the Eastern Association and Parliamentary forces further north. Its surrender after Naseby was part of the systematic reduction of Midlands garrisons. The castle was slighted; the present building dates from the 18th century.
