History & Significance

Criccieth Castle — a native Welsh castle later extended by Edward I — was held as a Royalist garrison during the Civil War. Its capture by Parliamentary forces completed the reduction of the Llŷn Peninsula. Criccieth was one of the few Welsh castles (as opposed to English Edwardian castles) to be used militarily in the Civil War. After its surrender Parliament did not slight it — the castle ruins survive on their rocky headland above Cardigan Bay.
