History & Significance

The Courtenay family of Devon raised the west country for Buckingham's rebellion in October 1483, centring their activity on Exeter. The rising attracted disaffected Woodville supporters and former Lancastrian sympathisers who preferred Tudor to Richard III. It dispersed quickly when Buckingham's collapse became known.
