The Battle

History & Significance

Stephen arrested Roger of Salisbury and his nephew the Bishop of Lincoln at a council at Oxford in 1139. He then besieged Roger s castle at Devizes to force surrender of the Wiltshire stronghold. Roger was treated harshly, denied food until the castle was yielded. The seizure of the episcopal castles alienated the Church and was one of the defining acts that turned many clergy against Stephen and toward the Empress.
