History & Significance

One of the first actions of the Civil War in Yorkshire. Thomas Fairfax, outnumbered by Newcastle's advancing army, conducted a masterful fighting defence of Tadcaster bridge over the Wharfe. His infantry held the bridge throughout the day. Under cover of darkness Fairfax withdrew the army intact to Selby, preserving Yorkshire's Parliamentary force for future operations. The action established his reputation for tactical skill.
