Parliamentary forces began investing Flint Castle in 1645 as the systematic reduction of north Welsh Royalist garrisons proceeded after Naseby. Flint Castle, Richard II last refuge before his capture in 1399, was held by a Royalist garrison. Parliamentary artillery was deployed against the walls and the garrison was placed under blockade. The castle resisted longer than some but eventually yielded in 1646 as the position became untenable.
