The Battle

History & Significance

Wallingford Castle guarded the Thames crossing south of Oxford and served as a satellite garrison to the Royalist capital. It surrendered only weeks after Oxford itself fell, having held out long after the main Royalist collapse. The castle was comprehensively slighted and little remains today.
