The Battle

History & Significance

Donnington Castle near Newbury was fortified and garrisoned for the king in 1643 by Colonel John Boys, who constructed artillery bastions around the medieval tower. The castle commanded the main road north from Newbury and became one of the most stubbornly held Royalist garrisons in Berkshire.
