History & Significance

William FitzAlan held Shrewsbury for the Empress against King Stephen. Stephen besieged the castle and when it fell had the garrison hanged, including the castellan Arnulf of Hesdin, an act of deliberate severity to discourage resistance. The hanging of the garrison shocked contemporaries and showed Stephen's early willingness to use harsh measures he later abandoned.
