The Battle

History & Significance

Edward III's first major battle — and a complete reversal of Bannockburn's lessons. The Scots charged uphill against English archers and were annihilated. Douglas and the regent were killed. Berwick fell. Edward Balliol was briefly restored. Scotland seemed on the verge of permanent English domination until David II returned from France and the tide slowly turned.
