History & Significance

After Bannockburn, Scotland gradually recovered all its territory. Berwick — lost since 1296 when Edward I seized it and massacred its population — was retaken in 1318 by a night surprise with the help of a merchant who lowered ropes from the walls. Berwick remained Scottish until 1333 when it was lost again after Halidon Hill, beginning centuries of disputed ownership.
