History & Significance

The wider Midlands Rising of 1607 included disturbances across south Warwickshire where enclosure of open fields had converted arable land to sheep pasture and depopulated villages. Levelling gangs in south Warwickshire pulled down hedges and filled ditches across several parishes in the weeks around the Newton Field confrontation. These Warwickshire disorders, while less dramatic than Newton Field, reflected the same deep anger at depopulation enclosure.
