History & Significance

MacDonalds retreating from a raid on Inverness were caught by the MacKintoshes at Clachnaharry on the Beauly Firth. The engagement was fought partly in the tidal water. Clan tradition records many MacDonalds were killed including their leader. Clachnaharry — 'the stone of watching' — was a traditional assembly and conflict point where the Great Glen meets the Beauly Firth, making it a natural chokepoint for forces moving along the Highland spine.
