History & Significance

The fort at Burrium (Usk) was established as a forward base pushing into the Usk valley into Silurian heartland. Archaeological evidence shows multiple phases of destruction and rebuilding consistent with Silurian attacks. The fort was eventually superseded by the legionary base at Isca Silurum (Caerleon) when the conquest of the Silures was finally completed.
