The Battle

History & Significance

Septimius Severus personally led the last major Roman offensive into Scotland with an army that ancient sources estimate at 40,000-50,000 men — the largest Roman force ever committed to a British campaign. The Maeatae, who had broken the peace treaty in 207 AD, submitted when they saw the scale of the force. Severus then advanced further north against the Caledonians.
