History & Significance

William Herbert of Raglan was Edward IV's principal agent in Wales, being Welshman who had backed York. He systematically suppressed Lancastrian resistance across south Wales in 1461, using both military force and royal grants to bring Welsh lords to the Yorkist side. His success was rewarded with the earldom of Pembroke. He was the most powerful Welshman since the Glyndwr period and used his position to build Raglan Castle into one of the finest late-medieval palaces in Britain.
