History & Significance

After the Second Battle of Newbury Charles I relieved Donnington Castle and removed its artillery; the combined Parliamentary commanders Essex Manchester and Waller had him in a pincer but failed to prevent his escape; the recriminations — especially between Cromwell and Manchester — directly caused the Self-Denying Ordinance and the New Model Army.
