History & Significance

As English military superiority grew after 1405, English forces conducted systematic punitive expeditions through the countryside of west Wales, burning crops and villages. The 1407 expedition through Ceredigion aimed to deny Glyndwr a food supply base. These harrying operations caused immense civilian suffering and began to erode the popular support that had sustained the rebellion. The tactics echo William the Conqueror's Harrying of the North.
