The Battle

History & Significance

Wareham's natural harbour on the Dorset coast made it strategically vital as a potential landing point for Angevin reinforcements from Normandy. Stephen moved to capture it in 1139 before Matilda could use it as her entry point into England, correctly identifying its importance. The castle's capture gave Stephen a coastal stronghold in Dorset and denied the Empress a convenient south-coast base for the first phase of the war.
