History & Significance

The Campbells under the first Earl of Argyll steadily reduced the Lamonts of Cowal from independent chieftains to dependent tenants. Armed raids backed by legal writs were the preferred Campbell technique. The Lamonts would later suffer the infamous Dunoon massacre at Campbell hands in 1646.
