The Battle

History & Significance

Following the Battle of Cromdale, government forces from the garrison at Inverlochy (the future Fort William) conducted sweeps through Lochaber against the Cameron and MacDonald clans who remained Jacobite. These sweeps burned turf houses, drove cattle and arrested known Jacobite leaders. The Camerons of Lochiel, whose lands surrounded Fort William, were repeatedly raided. These pacification operations were the direct precursor to the policy that culminated in the Glencoe Massacre of 1692 when the same tactics of intimidation and coercion were applied to the MacDonalds of Glencoe.
