Somerled mac Gillebrigte began his rise to power in Argyll in the 1130s by rallying the Gaelic population of the mainland against Norse overlordship. Born of mixed Gaelic and Norse descent, Somerled created a distinct Norse-Gaelic political identity in Argyll that challenged both the Norse kings of Man and the Scottish crown. His early campaigns expelled Norse settlers from the Argyll mainland.
