History & Significance

Bremetennacum (Ribchester) on the Ribble was one of the most important cavalry forts in northern England — the Ribble-Aire gap between the Pennines and the Forest of Bowland was the principal lowland route through northern England. Control of Ribchester also blocked any Brigantian retreat from Yorkshire into Lancashire across the Pennines.

Forces Involved

Ala II Asturum cavalry regiment (one of the largest cavalry units in Britain)
