History & Significance

The siege of York by the combined Parliamentary and Scottish armies was the strategic cause of Marston Moor. Prince Rupert marched to relieve it; the ensuing battle destroyed the Royalist northern army. York surrendered on honourable terms; its fall completed Parliamentary control of the north.
