History & Significance

During the rebellion of Warwick and Clarence in 1469, rebels under Robin of Redesdale used Pontefract Castle as their base of operations. The castle provided them legitimacy and a secure position before they marched south to defeat the royal army at Edgecote. Pontefract sat at the heart of Lancastrian and then Yorkist northern power.
