The Battle

History & Significance

Roman forts were established as far north as Ythan Wells in Aberdeenshire following Mons Graupius. The Caledonian survivors of the battle continued guerrilla resistance against these isolated outposts. When Domitian required troops for the Dacian wars and recalled the Second Legion from Britain in 87 AD, the entire Scottish fort system was abandoned — the Caledonians had effectively won by survival.
