Farnham Castle in Surrey, seat of the Bishop of Winchester, was seized by Royalists at the outbreak of the Civil War. Parliamentary forces under Sir William Waller retook it in November 1642 after a brief engagement, establishing it as one of the most important Parliamentary bases in Surrey and Hampshire, used throughout the war as a headquarters and garrison for operations against Basing House.
