The Battle

History & Significance

After Culloden, government forces swept through Badenoch hunting Jacobite survivors. Cluny MacPherson hid in a cave (Cluny's Cage) on Ben Alder for nine years before finally escaping to France. The brutal suppression of the Highlands — burning, disarmament, and proscription of the tartan — was intended to permanently destroy the clan system that had made Jacobite risings possible.
