History & Significance

During the Second Civil War, Surrey Royalists attempted to raise the county at Kingston upon Thames, a traditional assembly point for Surrey men. The rising was quickly suppressed by parliamentary forces from London before it could link with the Kentish rising at Maidstone. The Earl of Holland was involved in the Surrey rising and was later captured and executed. Kingston's proximity to London made any Royalist presence there a threat to the capital.
