The Battle

History & Significance

The infantry engagement at Edgehill saw the Royalist foot advance down the slope and engage the Parliamentary centre after the cavalry wings had engaged. Parliamentary cavalry under Sir Philip Stapleton conducted a countercharge against the advancing Royalist infantry that temporarily halted the Royalist foot. The infantry musketeers and pikemen then fought a prolonged inconclusive engagement as both cavalry wings pursued off the field.
