History & Significance

Newcastle Emlyn Castle in Carmarthenshire was held by Royalist forces before falling to Parliament. The castle sits on a loop of the Teifi — a naturally strong position. After the Civil War it was partially demolished. The ruins are incorporated into a later country house estate. West Wales changed hands several times as Parliamentary forces pushed north from Pembroke and Royalists tried to hold the interior.
