The Battle

History & Significance

During the Year of the Four Emperors, when Rome was distracted by civil war, Venutius finally overthrew Cartimandua. Roman auxiliary forces could rescue the queen but could not prevent Venutius from seizing control. Tacitus records that the Romans evacuated Cartimandua but left Venutius the kingdom and themselves the war. This set the stage for the conquest of the north under Cerialis.

Casualties & Losses

Roman auxiliaries took casualties; Cartimandua evacuated; Brigantian loyalists scattered
