Wem in north Shropshire was a Parliamentary stronghold in a county that was predominantly Royalist. In 1643 a Royalist force attacked the town and was repulsed by the garrison — reportedly including women and children who helped defend the walls. The successful defence of Wem gave Parliament a secure base in north Shropshire from which to operate against the Royalist garrison at Shrewsbury. 'The women of Wem' became a minor Civil War legend.
