The Battle

History & Significance

Eboracum served as the base for Legio VI Victrix from c.122 AD and hosted three emperors — Septimius Severus, Caracalla, and Constantius Chlorus who died there in 306. Legionary records and tombstones attest to frequent military activity. The dual settlement — fortress and colonia — required constant policing against raiding parties who penetrated the Vale of York during the 196-197 and 367-368 crises.

Forces Involved

Romans (garrison and internal forces) variable; skirmish-scale engagements over centuries.
