History & Significance

Skipton Castle, the Clifford stronghold guarding the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales, held out months after Naseby under Sir John Mallory. The garrison received honourable terms and marched out with drums and colours. Lady Anne Clifford would later restore the castle; it remains among the best-preserved medieval castles in England.
