History & Significance

Castle Menzies near Weem in Perthshire was the stronghold of the Clan Menzies, who were divided in loyalty during the 1689 rising. The castle sat in the Tay valley between Jacobite-held Atholl and the government-controlled Lowlands. Jacobite forces attempted to press the Menzies into the rising and minor confrontations occurred around Castle Menzies as both sides sought to secure this strategically placed tower house. Some Menzies joined the Jacobite cause while others maintained neutrality. The castle changed hands or was threatened on multiple occasions during the 1689 campaign.
