History & Significance

Following the Pentland Rising of 1666, the Scottish government authorised the raising of independent Highland Companies to police the Highland line and prevent royalist or Covenanting disorders in the Perthshire and central Highland area. These companies, predecessors of the Black Watch, conducted patrols and minor actions across the Highland frontier zone, suppressing disorder and demonstrating government authority.
