The Battle

History & Significance

Penruddock's Royalist force marched through Blandford Forum on its way west after leaving Salisbury in March 1655. The insurgents hoped to gather recruits in Dorset before crossing into Devon and Cornwall to raise the western counties. The march through Dorset attracted few volunteers, demonstrating the failure of western gentry to turn out for the rising.
