History & Significance

Charles I's army was encamped on Borough Hill at Daventry in the days before Naseby. Parliamentary cavalry probed the position; the Royalists considered attacking the New Model Army but ultimately delayed until Rupert forced the decision at Naseby. The Daventry pause proved fatal — the delay allowed the New Model Army to close up and choose its ground at Naseby. The Iron Age hillfort on Borough Hill was the Royalist camp site.
