History & Significance

Worcester had been a Royalist city from the start of the war, scene of the first skirmish at Powick Bridge. Parliament blockaded it from early 1646 and the city surrendered in July. Fairfax allowed the garrison to march out on honourable terms. Five years later Cromwell would defeat Charles II's army here.
