Portchester Castle, the Roman Saxon Shore fort on Portsmouth Harbour, was garrisoned by Parliamentary forces as an outpost covering Portsmouth and the northern shore of the harbour. The garrison conducted operations against Royalist raiders from Hampshire and maintained watch over the harbour entrance.
