History & Significance

Tacitus records that Agricola had an Irish exile at his court and believed Ireland could be conquered with one legion and auxiliaries. Roman artefacts — coins, metalwork, and possibly a Roman trading post — have been found at Drumanagh (County Dublin) and other sites. Whether this represents a military raid, a trading station, or simply cross-channel commerce is disputed. Ireland was never formally invaded or conquered by Rome but was clearly within Rome's sphere of influence.
