The Battle

History & Significance

The Western Association was the Royalist organisational network in the west of England that attempted to coordinate the 1655 insurrection. Centred on Devon, Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire, it planned simultaneous risings across the western counties to coincide with the Penruddock action. The failure of gentry across the west to turn out despite organisation demonstrated the exhaustion of the Royalist will to fight.
