History & Significance

Henry III recognises Llywelyn ap Gruffudd as Prince of Wales in the Treaty of Montgomery, the high point of his power. The treaty acknowledges his rights over all native Welsh princes and control of territory he had won in war. A political settlement following years of military campaigning, it represents the greatest formal English recognition of Welsh sovereignty.
